AI, Data Sovereignty, and Indigenous Governance: Shaping the Future of Climate and Biodiversity Policies
Artificial intelligence and data-driven systems are increasingly shaping how the world responds to the climate and biodiversity crises. From satellite monitoring to conservation planning, digital tools promise efficiency and scale. Yet for many Indigenous Peoples and local communities, these same technologies carry profound risks — from data extraction without consent to the misappropriation of traditional knowledge and biased algorithms that reinforce inequality.
The next GroundWork: Policy Briefings for Action session will bring together Indigenous leaders, technologists, and policy advocates to explore how AI intersects with Indigenous sovereignty, governance, and rights. The conversation will highlight Indigenous-led innovation and discuss what ethical, legal, and policy safeguards are needed to ensure that technology serves people and planet — not power and profit.
Participants will learn about frameworks that center Indigenous data sovereignty, such as the CARE Principles, and explore how concepts like Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) can extend to digital, ecological, and genetic data. The dialogue will also identify upcoming international policy moments where these safeguards can be strengthened.
Join us on Thursday, 23 October 2025, for this timely session on shaping a just digital future for climate and biodiversity.
